Known worldwide as an Irish historic site, the haunting history of Middle Island is masked by its natural beauty. When Irish settlers sailed down the mighty Miramichi River in the mid-1800s, they were greeted by an island that would serve as a quarantine area for ill travelers - where their long journey would meet and unfortunate end.
In recent years, Middle Island has seen a
transformation into a naturally beautiful recreaction park. The history and significance of this island has not been forgotten, and is honoured in an interpretive centre constructed by the Middle Island Irish Historical Commission. Additionally, a replication of the historic lighthouse that ushered in a wave of immigrants has been built to remind visitors of a time since passed.
The construction of Captain's Galley Restaurant and the installation of a large riverfront amphitheatre, hosting live entertainment during the summer months, makes Middle Island a key destination for both residents and visitors.
