On January 1, 2000, the Historic Chatham Business District, of which Historic Water Street is a major component, was officially designated as the first provincial historic district by the Povince of New Brunswick.
Historic Water Street has always been a major component in the downtown area of the former Town of Chatham, and remains so in the City of Miramichi. As the settling point of many of the area’s first families, Historic Water Street overlooks the Miramichi River and has undergone several upgrades in recent years with the assistance of Miramichi Landings.
Currently a developing shopping district,
Historic Water Street is located directly next to another Miramichi Landings site, Waterford Green. The close proximity of each of the two sites provides residents and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the river and take a stroll through the history of our founding times.
Miramichi Landings has recently upgraded key architectural aspects of Historic Water Street, primarily with the rejuvenation of the Old Post Office, originally built in 1893. This building now serves as the Welcome Centre for Miramichi Landings, offering visitor information, ticket sales, and live entertainment.
